Few games can rival Warhawk for that awesome arcade flyer experience. Though not as clean looking as Warhawk, Namco s Air Combat comes damn close. Basically, you fly head-to-head against the computer, and have to take out oil refineries, stop bombing missions, and even knock out a city, while fending off an attack from the air and ground. It s even more intense than it sounds. Each mission pays, so you can upgrade your plane to more powerful war monsters like Stealths, F-14 s, Migs, and F-22 s. Each has different strengths which you can use on specific missions. The Stealth, for example, is perfect for attacking the city at night. Gameplay, always one of Namco s strengths, is rock solid in Air Combat. Attacks can be made from any angle, and the correct angle is often tantamount to your success. All of your gauges (altitude, speed, compass, and artificial horizon) are present, and you can even commission a wing person to help out. Air Combat falters only when it comes to its graphics. The flickery images and bland colors do nothing to showcase the PlayStation s graphics prowess. However, the gameplay more than makes up for the shoddy presentation. If you liked Warhawk, give Air Combat a look.
