Samurai Shodown RPG

The Eight Holy Warriors are back... this time for a quest

Publisher: SNK
Developer: SNK
Genre: RPG

More screenshots for you to gander at. The combat mode is a bit similar to Suikoden, in the sense that every time a character attacks, the camera zooms in a bit to detail the action.

Storywise, SSRPG is more elaborate than most RPG fare. Through the course of the game, a lot of the relationships behind the SS fighting games get revealed. Did you know that the big fat Earthquake and Galford (blond San Francisco ninja with a dog) share a past?

Is it just me, or does it seem that whenever a fighting/action game becomes a phenomenon, it becomes an RPG? Mortal Kombat becomes Mythologies, Panzer Dragoon becomes Azel, and Virtua Fighter may even get one. Why should Samurai Shodown be any different? The popular Neo-Geo fighting game becomes an RPG in June, under the name Samurai Showdown: Bushido Saga Extreme.

It's set in the same era as the other Samurai Shodowns, and has the main character Haohmaru, the wine guzzling Holy Warrior, defeating your demon lords in exotic locations. You'll be able to hook up with Charlotte, Jubei, Kyoshiro Senryo, Ukyo, Galford, and even Caffeine Nicotine.

Gameplay follows a pretty standard format, with towns, shops, and scenery, with a nice medieval touch. Unlike other RPGs, it looks like you can travel as a group, instead of having eight characters shoved up the main characters...robe.

Combat is equally traditional, with turn based attacks. SSRPG will include a time/power meter, similar to Final Fantasy VII's combat system. Also nice is the in-battle hit point meter. You'll be able to see on screen how much a blow takes off the opponent.

There are enough Shodown fans in the US to drool at the thought of this RPG, standard as it may be. Besides it's always been the story, not bells and whistles that have sold this genre.

It looks like your party's characters will all come from the fighting games

SSRPG won't be breaking new ground, but will make good use of older RPG convetions
